When do I harvest hemp grain?

When the seed is ready for the same header you would use on soybeans or wheat, and you can have that grain at a dryer within 3 to 4 hours. HFGA says to bring it down to 8 percent moisture so it does not spoil, then a regular bin will hold it. They do not publish a calendar date for that cut. The buyer can ask for it sooner, cleaner, or drier.

How do I dry and store hemp grain?

Dry hemp grain to 8 percent within 3 to 4 hours of harvest, then store it in a regular bin. HFGA's warning is spoilage. The buyer can ask for drier.

Grain harvest is a seed that will not sit. HFGA's spring planting guide says to use the header you use for soybeans or wheat, then get the grain to a local dryer within 3 to 4 hours and down to 8 percent moisture. After that, a traditional bin is enough. The buyer may tighten every one of those numbers.

Drying and the bin are How do I dry and store hemp grain?. What the buyer will charge you for is What will a hemp grain buyer dock for?.

The stalk is a second harvest

If you are also selling fiber, the straw comes off after the seed. When do I harvest hemp fiber? is that cut. HFGA's textile standard treats the grain and the straw as separate lots. Wet straw after a grain harvest does not become textile fiber because the seed checked out.

The short contrast is How is hemp fiber different from hemp grain?. Heartland buys both, which is why the order of the two harvests should be in the contract before you plant.

What rechem does not time

Planting chemistry does not pick the harvest day. It is what gave the plants an even start so the heads filled together. That note is What planting chemistry does hemp grain need?. The map is Grain.

FAQ

Quick answers about this part of the approach.

Do I harvest grain before the stalks?

Yes, if the field is both. The seed will not wait in a wagon. The straw can still be fiber afterward if it meets the fiber moisture rules.

What header?

The one you use for soybeans or wheat. HFGA reserves the Kemper header and the sickle bar for the stalk cut.

What if the load sits overnight?

HFGA's warning is spoilage. Three to four hours to a dryer is their general recommendation, not a suggestion to park the truck.

Does the buyer change the day?

They can. Agree moisture, cleanup, and the delivery day before you open the field. A late load is one of the ways HFGA says the margin disappears.

Is fiber harvested the same week?

Only if you planned a dual-purpose crop. Fiber is a stalk cut after the seed is off, dried under 15 percent, then baled. It is not the same pass.
